The 65th Cannes Film Festival got underway this week. The week-long event brings together celebrities and stars of the silver from all over the world, which in turn, means we get a whole lotta glamour! Maybe it’s because it’s the French Riviera. Maybe it’s because it’s invite only and the prestige of it all. Whatever the reason the Cannes red carpet always delivers, so today’s Friday Favorites are my favorite looks from day 1 and 2. (Do not fret. I plan on tracking the entire week. This is just the beginning). I tried to write little something about each woman and/or dress, but was overcome by the stunningness and found myself sitting mouth agape, unable to come up with anything but monosyllabic adjectives and gems like ”oh my wow” and “seriously?” Not exactly an eloquent review, so I’m going to let the photos speak for themselves for the most part. My guess is you’ll have similar reactions. If not, tell me who are your favorites so far. Diane Kruger in Giambattista Valli (Photo: AFP) Marion Cotillard in Dior (Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images Entertainment) Eva Herzigova in Dolce & Gabbana (Photo: PacificCoastNews.com) Jane Fonda in Atlier Versace (Photo: PacificCoastNews.com). Sister can still rock a dress! I’ve said it [...]

Today is a bit of a cheat day (like – if this blog was a diet, this post would be a brownie). I’m piggy backing off a really cool series fellow blogger, Haley, is doing over on her blog – Cardigan Junkie. Haley, the lucky girl, is off living la dolce vita in Italy. While she’s gone, she’s running a guest blogger series called “Be My Guest” in which she’s introduces her readers to other bloggers. Yours truly is going to be one of her guests, but you all already know me. So instead, I figured I’d help spread the love and introduce you to friends of friends – Haley’s other guests. Just click on the images below and it will take you directly to the individual blogs. Do a little exploring! And of course, make sure to check out Cardigan Junkie! Haley is going to have 12 days of guests, so make sure you keep checking back.

I don’t know how it was where you live, but yesterday in the DMV was awfully humid. It was the kind of day that comes along every spring that prompts me to ponder – should I just get ready in the gym at the office rather than showering before I leave the house? I end up a sweaty, frizzy mess, so why bother primping pre-commute. It also kept my summer work options. I pretty much live in skirts in the summer. I don’t do shorts, so they’re my best alternative. [Please note, I have nothing against shorts. In fact, I think are tons of cute ways to wear them. Alas, my hips, butt and thighs are not on board]. In keeping with my recent summer office options kick, I figured I’d offer up some ideas for summer work skirts. Piggy backing on my parting words in yesterday’s post – the part about finding flattering clothes for your shape – let’s talk skirt shapes. Take a look at yourself in the mirror. Where is the widest point on the lower half of your body? (I know not exactly a fun exercise, but trust me!) Now lift one leg so you can tell [...]

I’ve been neglecting my “sounding off” series for the last few weeks, but today I’m back with a vengeance. I try to keep things light and positive on the blog, but today, I’m going to rant a bit – I do not why people wear clothes that simply do. not. fit!! Let me start by explaining what prompted this post. On my way home, I passed a woman that really needs a serious talking to. She was wearing a pair of high waist pants that pinched her tiny waist and were so snug on her hips and rear, it created a contained muffin top. Her shirt was too short and rode up when she moved. She kept tugging it down as she walked. And finally, a blazer, which, had the rest of the outfit not been a complete mess, I would say was cropped, but given the complete disaster she was, I’m going with it was way too small. Now, let me be clear. I am not, in anyway criticizing this woman’s body or weight. She had an hour glass shape – small waist, larger bust, larger hips. She had curves. She had boobs and hips and a butt. She was [...]

Time for another designer/mass market collaboration. Calvin Klein for Macy’s by Francisco Costa launches tomorrow, May, 15, 2012. (Photo: HuffingtonPost.com) There isn’t too much of a wow factor in the capsule collection, but it is replete with the clean-lined, classic pieces that are signature Calvin Klein. Here are 4 that I really like. I think they would be great for the office in the summer. The long one (also comes in clay & black), would be great dressed up for an evening look too. (Photos: HuffingtonPost.com) The thing that gives me some pause is the pricing. I thought the whole point of these types of collaborations was to provide a less expensive alternative to the “real” thing, but the pieces in the Macy’s collection are priced between $135 and $180 – more expensive than the Calvin Klein pieces you can buy at other stores that carries the brand. These are from Nordstrom’s    Calvin Klein Origami Dress {$118}; Calvin Klein Belted Cowel Neck {$118} And thesse from Bloomingdale’s    Calvin Klein Vertical Seam Dress {$120}; Calvin Klein Color Block Sheath {On sale $90}

It’s Friday! Yay, yay, yaaaaaay!! You know what I like as much as Fridays? Splurging on things I don’t really need, but really, really want. I’m a firm believer in retail therapy. You know that thing when you are stressed out, sad, anxious or any other sad-face-feeling and you buy stuff? Most of my retail therapy-ing is small stuff. When I splurge, I hem and haw and evaluate and price compare and then think some more. Sometimes I’m just to practical for my own good. Yes, I realize that doesn’t make any sense. Anyway, today’s Friday Favorites is on splurges – the items you buy even though it means eating cereal for dinner for 2 weeks so you can buy it and still pay your rent. My biggest splurge are my Christian Louboutin peep-toe pumps. I’ve only worn them a couple of times – definitely not enough to justify the price, but I don’t care! I love them! Sometimes I just sit and look at them (no, not really). Christian Louboutin – Very Prive Open-Toe Platform Pumps I’ve been trying to be responsible latley and save my money and I can’t very well right an entire post about a pair of shoes (well [...]

I noticed I’ve been on a bit of a “what to wear to work” kick recently (e.g. intern post & pants post). I’m pretty sure this is in large part because I’m back in an office setting and I have to figure out of what to wear to work myself.  Anyway, you’re getting another ideas for the office post today. Today, I give you the sleeveless blazer. In all honesty, I’m not entirely sure what makes them sleeveless blazers, as opposed to say, I don’t know…a vest. From what I can deduce, the blazers seem to be a little bit longer, but I have a feeling it’s just another way to get us eager consumers to buy more stuff . Whatever you call them, they are another good office option for summer. Check it. Vest: Rag & Bone {$465}; Top: Catherine Malandrino {$56}; Skirt: J. Crew {$138}; Shoe: Wallis Fashion {$49} Vest: Michael Kors {$600}; Pants: MICHAEL Michael Kors {$88}; Cami: The Outnet {$41}; Shoes: DSW {$50}; Bracelet: Asos {$36}; Earrings: Gerard Yosca {$190} The options I used in the look above are rather pricey, but there are more reasonable options out there like these:  Zara {$90}; Top: Topshop {$110}; Asos {$127}

This past Saturday, my friend, Tracy V., and I had plans to work out together. This plan was upended by about 11am and replaced with brunch, helping her accessorize her dress for the wedding we’re going to this Saturday and wine. Lots of wine! A Wine Riot, if you will. Saturday was the Second Glass, Wine Riot tour at DAR Constitution Hall. Now, I’ve been to wine tastings before. I’ve even attended wine classes that are supposed to teach you how to taste and select wines, but when it comes down to it, I never get the hints of fruit and pepper. I know if I like it or I don’t. Second Glass and I seem to have the same philosophy: “We want you to drink more wine. Sure, wine can seem complicated, but in the end it all comes down to whether you like it or not. It’s that simple.” And that it is! The Wine Riot brought 70+ wineries from all over the country to one place. Attendees had the opportunity to attend “crash courses” on wine making and wander from table to table to try more than 250 wines. How do you keep track of 250 wines? Oh, there’s [...]

I’m constantly preaching about wearing color and I wanted to show you that I put my money where my mouth is, or I put my pants where, er, uh ok so that doesn’t really work. The point is, I practice what I preach. Check it out. That’s me in the pictures below. You’re just going to have to trust me on that. I wore the floral cropped pants, (an Emily original ) to the Wine Riot on Saturday night (more on that tomorrow); the yellow, (thrifted – Similar $23), to work and then to the Behind NOVAFW event; the red ones, (Ann Taylor Loft- Similar $70), for work; and the coral palazzos, (Asos $28), to brunch. We’ve discussed colored denim a couple of times now (here and here), but what about bright pants for work? I told you I wore two of the above for work and while I probably won’t bust out my florals at the office, there are plenty of ways to wear color for work. Like this. These are some pants, like with a capital P, so keep the rest of your outfit simple and skew conservative with cuts and silhouettes. For example, I’d pair this eye-searing turquoise with [...]

Happy Monday! I don’t know about you, but I had a crazy-busy weekend. I have lots to share with you all this week, so I guess I should get to it. Friday night I attended Luxe Lifestyle’s “Behind the Scenes of NOVA Fashion Week” at the Artisphere in Rosslyn. Sometimes it feels like for-eh-vur between show seasons, (NOVA fashion week actually isn’t until October). This was a nice little off-season event for those of us jonesing for a catwalk and offered attendees a glimpse in to some of what goes into putting on a fashion show. There were lots of familiar faces on hand. Natalie (Fashionably Broke), Ashley (Ashley in DC), Alison (Wardrobe Oxygen), Angelica (Clarendon Moms) I’m not sure if I’d consider myself a cupcake connoisseur, but I tried a few of the places around town and know what I like and uhhhh, the cupcakes and cake pops from Perfect Pink Cupcakes were freakin’ unbelievable! Attendees could watch as models were in hair and make-up and talk with the hair and make-up artists about trends, how-tos, etc. Nadine (I’m With Beautiful), Me, Ashley (LPM Ashley) The above photo is from the blog Fashion Hauties.
