Project Runway All-Stars: Every Picture Tells a Story

I’m sans DVR tonight folks, but my little fingers will be type, type, typing away as fast as I can to get down all the good stuff from the latest PR All-Stars. I must say, I’ve been a bit bored so far with this season. Let’s turn it around PR. Step up your game!!!  This is All-Stars!!!

[Spoiler] They didn’t  Step it up that is, but you know what?  I’m resolving to be ok with the no drama. I’m accepting that All-Stars is about the designs rather than the designers.

I’m not sure why when Heidi struts onto the runway at the beginning of the episode I think it’s cute. It’s Heidi. Carolyn’s strike a pose, however, is annoying. Perhaps I am just overly tired. It’s been a long week.

The Challenge: Joanna, joined by the Sr. VP of USA Today, met the designers in the work to explain this week’s “interactive” challenge. The PR powers-that-be asked Project Runway fans from around the world to tweet in photos. Each designer picked a photo that then served as their inspiration for a look. They got a budget of $150 and 1 day. And the winner would get a feature in USA Today

Emilio won last week so he got to pick his picture first. Apparently, the win also gave him the distinction of being the time keeper/random transition person for the week. It’s nice they share those duties.

Emilio picked Casanova to go with him to pick their pics first. They, in turn, picked Ivy and Althea to go next and so on. I kinda missed the order of the next pickers, but Laura Kathleen and Andrae were picked last. LK thinks it’s because everyone is jealous of her because she’s so privileged (gag me) and Andrae worries he’s an outsider (oh, hang in there buddy! (though I agree with Meghan “Team Dmitry.” He’s just the same without his foil, Santino.

  • Ivy picked a butterfly because she thinks it represents change and evolution
  • Uli chose a picture from a plane window
  • LK chose water dropping into a pond
  • Casanova picked a photo of someone modeling that he thought was a good combo of masculine and feminine
  • Emilio picked a picture of a little girl and said he wants to show the judges his softer side
  • Althea chose one of an old train station in England
  • Kayne chose a picture of a pile of jewelry
  • Anthony Ryan’s looked like a picture through a bridge
  • Andrae picked a picture of a woman who he thought looked forlorn because he was sad too.

The Workroom: Not much. Alison Maxwell, Style Editor at USA Today joined Joanna for the critiques. Both women looked horrified when Emilio told them that his headline was “Sophie’s Choice” because the little girl in his picture was named Sophie. Joanna had one quip for Kayne that red and lace can be a little hooker-y.” Laura Kathleen quipped (to the camera) that she doesn’t want to make clothes for farmers when Alison told her to make sure the look was wearable.  Andrae crawled under his table and did Golum imitations. Althea keeps talking about pushing it and taking risks. I’m not sure if it is foreshadowing for an appearance in the bottom. Holy crap did anyone notice that pour of wine in Uli had. Where is that place. That’s what I call a glass of wine!

The commercial for the TV movie Liz & Dick just came on. Lindsay Lohan explains that she thinks she is just like Elizabeth Taylor because Liz Taylor loved diamonds and so does she. Um, yeah, I’m not going to be watching that.

Time for hair and make-up – close up on products; Emilio calls out more time deadlines; and the world spins madly on. Casanova called Kayne’s look Parisian prostitute with a chicken on her head and Ivy, spot on, compared Joshua’s look to Rainbow Brite. On to the runway.

The Judging and the Runway:

Tavi Gevinson (blogger) and Charlotte Ronson (designer) were the guest judges this week. Carolyn wore some sort of Star Trek federation dress. The other usual suspects were…usual.

I think this runway showed cream rising to the top. There were clear disparities between some of the designer’s skills. Joshua and Andrae, clearly, were going to be on the bottom. Here’s how it all played out.

Safe as Houses

Casanova

Is it just me or did Casanova just remake the look in his picture? Other than that, I really like this look.

Uli

It was a pretty dress. Not her best. Not her worst. I think the judges got it right moving her through as safe.

Kayne

Eh, it’s ok. I don’t like the feather and I don’t see the picture, but whatever.

Ivy

I like the fabric she chose, but that’s really the only thing that gives it a wow factor, but I could see the inspiration from the photo.

Laura Kathleen

LK may be a complete pain in the butt, but I think she has a chance of making it pretty far. The judges loved the fabric and the fact that she dyed it. I must say it’s kind of like her picture took on fabric form. I liked the dress in general, but would have preferred if those front flap things were secured down. I didn’t like the open panel front thing.

Emilio

I loved the sketch and I really liked the dress. I’m not sure I could wear it, but it was fun – totally different than anything else anyone did. I think Emilio has a real shot at the title.

Bottom

Althea

Looks like my prediction was accurate. I don’t think Althea’s was that bad. Certainly nowhere near as bad as the bottom 2 this week. Like the judges, I love the jacket, hate the pants.

Joshua

Ugh. That is what I wrote when the look came onto the runway. That is just hideous. He’s lucky the judges were tired of Andrae’s oddness.

AndraeOUT

Oh, I’m so sad, but I must say, it was time. All of his conceptual designs just didn’t translate on the runway. I think the judges just got tired of not understanding. I still think you are hilarious Andrae and I wish you the best you odd man you.

And here’s what Meghan “Team Dmitry” has to say about it all: Yes, it was time for Andrae to go. I also am just bothered by Carolyn! I was surprised how much I actually liked Casanova’s outfit. While it was a good dress, I think Anthony Ryan won this week as a consolation for not winning last week :)

Besides being a bit boring, the Lifetime editing is also making it SOOOO predictable and I think helping with the “boring”. For example, Joshua had about 93 one-on-one comments in the very beginning which told me he was in the top or bottom. All of the comments about Andrae’s personality (“he’s a loon” etc.) told me that he was going home tonight. Oh, and Ivy needs to stop making outfits with sheer bottoms that require hot-pants/boy-shorts underneath!!!
