The new television season is starting up again and I, for one, am very excited. I hate it when people respond to the “did you see XYZ last night” question with “oh, I don’t really watch television” – haughty tone, looking down his/her nose, eyes judging. Fine, go read Dostoevsky and leave me alone. Pretty Little Liars is on! I like TV! There, I said it. I like collapsing on the couch to let the day slip away to nothing more than who will be “auf’d,” whether Castle and Beckett will FINALLY get together; and, yes, I “dance it out” with Meredith and Christina. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, email me. I’ll help set your DVR for fall. Also, just for the record, I also really like to read as well).
Where am I going with this little rant? Why the clothes, of course! Television affects the runways and the runways affect what we wear – whether consciously or not. See Cerulean sweaters. I know it’s been going on for-eh-vur, but I’m starting with recent history and Mad Men.

It even spawned a whole line for Banana Republic.

Then came the prohibition-era drama, Boardwalk Empire. Mobsters + suffragettes + dance hall girls and “kept” women = really fun clothes.
Gretchen Mol, Aleska Palladino, Kelly Macdonald and Paz de la Huerta in Vanity Fair’s Babes in Mobland.

Such a pretty, simple blouse whether 1921 or 2011!
This TV season brings us 2 new period shows, Pan Am and The Playboy Club, both set in the 1960’s, and a new set of Angels

I LOVE the dress Christina Ricci is wearing and the blue one is really cute too.

I couldn’t find any stills that did not have them all in bunny costumes, so I guess where The Playboy Club will take us fashion-wise is TBD.

When it comes to the new Charlie’s Angels, I’m a bit torn. I loved the original Angels. In college, my friends and I dressed as the Angels for at least 2 disco parties -awesome, staged gun pose and all. No, I will not be sharing photos. The platform shoes, the bell bottoms…and tell me the “THEN” looks below wouldn’t work today (with a few slight modifications)!
THEN:

NOW:

So, new Angels, (props for diversifying btw), you have some big shoes to fill! I’m reserving judgment for now. Please don’t disappoint me!
No, I’m not suggesting you go out and get a cornflower blue skirt-suit, and I’m certainly not suggesting you dress like a Playboy Bunny – bell bottoms and platforms, however, not a bad idea. I’m saying keep your eyes open! Style inspiration is everywhere. Oh, I’m also saying don’t look down on people who like television!!!!

love the outfit of the Angel on the right in that last picture!
